Belly Fat OR Bloat?

Ah yes, the age old question, “am I bloating or is it just fat?” I must admit I used to ask myself this question ALL the time. Sincerely, I  didn’t know the difference. One time, I carried weight around my midsection and I brushed it off and lied to myself, “Oh you’re just bloating!” Ha! Yea right.

Since then, I’ve grown and understood when my body was bloated or carried extra baggage. Lucky for you, I will give you a breakdown of how you can spot the difference too. Trust me, it may seem easy to spot the difference but many people can confuse the two.

First, let’s define the jelly:

Belly Fat: Its completely NORMAL. Yes, even folks with the “flattest” abs carry belly fat. HOWEVER, an excess amount of abdominal fat can cause medical issues such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and some cancers. READ MORE HERE

The causes of Belly Fat:

  • Stress
  • More stress
  • Eating too many processed foods
  • Eating too many “healthy foods” (slooow down on nuts, oils, avocados, fruits! Aka belly fat’s secret agents)
  • You’re workouts aren’t challenging
  • Not enough sleep
  • Not drinking enough water

Let’s move onto our beloved friend, bloating:

Bloating: Abdominal Bloating is also known as dyspepsia and it happens to almost everyone from time to time. Eating habit or a chronic digestive problem can trigger indigestion.

The Causes Of Bloating:

  • Lactose intolerance
  • Menstruation (PMS)
  • Food Allergy Basics
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Gas & Flatulence

Soooo, how can one SPOT the difference?

Well it’s simple:

Bloating is temporary and is often caused by the foods you eat.

Belly fat is long term, takes a while to lose and is often, too, caused by the foods you eat.

Solutions:

Every (body) is different. I normally bloat if I eat loads of sweets, salty things, premenstrual, or if I drink too much water (yes, too much water). In my experience, I normally get bloated if I eat a cheat meal the night before. I can get so bloated that I appear pregnant! In order for me to alleviate the swelling, I use a sweatbelt/suanabelt during most of my exercises.

 **You can purchase one at your local store or online for less than $10!). The belt helps get rid of excess water weight that trapped in your stomach. ** I wrote a in-depth post about my experience with sauna belts. 

Secondly, you can try Apple Cider Vinegar shot (anti-inflammatory) OR Lemon juice with warm water (the acid breaks down the protein and alkalize the bowels for in preparation for nutritional absorption.)

If you want to lose belly fat you must adjust your diet and go by an 80% to 20% rule. 80% to 20% rule means you eat 80% clean eats and 20% “unclean” treats. Again, every (body) is different and you DON’T have to follow this rule but it has helped me and I try to stick with it.

Also, you must understand that you CANNOT spot reduce! Again, you CANNOT spot reduce! You cannot perform 3,000 crutches and expect to receive abs in the upcoming weeks. From experience, I lost loads of belly fat from completing HITT (High Intensity Workouts), slept 7-8 hours per night, reduced my stress levels, and ate pretty clean. It can take some time to see real cold hard results, but don’t give up or give in!
