We live in the age of social media where everyone posts their daily interactions. Whether it’s: what they’re eating, outfit of the day, outfit of the night, relationships, first kiss, first dance, and pretty much everything under the sun is broadcast on social media. It can be entertaining and sickening at the same time. It’s so EASY for us to get caught up on people’s lives and subconsciously compare them to our own. I’m gonna be honest, I’ve scrolled through Facebook or Instagram salivating on frequent updates and I thought, “Wow! Their lives’ seems so amazing! What on earth am I doing with my life?”
Seriously, social media can be such a mind trick. It took me some time to finally realize that what I see on social media are sometimes highlight reels and not the real deal. I had to learn to be confident in my dry seasons and have faith that I will attain my goals too.
Below you will read few tips and tricks to help you to avoid comparing yourself to others.
1. KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND
WHAT YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE
You alone are enough and complete. Trust, it takes time to believe this mantra. I used to find happiness in others or think people online had a blast or “better” lives than me. It was sickening! I had to learn that my life was fine the way it is. I didn’t need to post every single fun moment on social media…I could just live in the moment. Now, there’s nothing wrong with snapping a few photos and posting them for friends and families to see, I’ve had my own share too. However, there’s just something about living in the moment and being present that means so much more than showing off a “good time.” For the most part, that party/club they’re posting can be really boring and they’re “saying” that it’s the best event of the year! *Tell’em boy BYE!*
2. LOG OFF
Simply log-off. Yes sign-off every single social media account you have and solely focus on the real world. Give yourself a mental break and do something fun with friends or spend quality time with yourself. There’s a world full of adventures and great times outside your electronics. Trust me.
3. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
Pull out that old-school pen and paper and list your goals…they can be big or small. Just list them down and don’t overthink. Be realistic and attack them one by one. You got this!
4. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF
Only you know what you like and only YOU know what you are capable of achieving so own it. I grew up believing that God places us in specific times and purposes which means you are here for a reason. You are given special gifts and talents that ONLY you can do…no one else. So utilize them! If you’re passionate about something, go for it and don’t worry about what others will say. People will talk until the end of times and probably after that too. Keep going!
5. ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD
Whenever you scroll through your feed you see folks on yachts, travelling on planes, eating at fancy restaurants, and/or riding an elephant at on an exotic island. You may be on your couch wondering why you’re life isn’t so great? Well truth be told, we all have fun moments that can be shared on social media but do we really have to share them to prove to folks we are having a grand ole time? Yes there are people who innocently share a pic or status update but don’t get caught up in the hype! All that glitters is not gold and you never know what’s happening behind closed doors. Besides, if they are posting so much then that means they aren’t really enjoying the moment. So be present and enjoy every moment to add to your life and not your “likes.”
As I said before, I used to struggle with comparing myself to people on and off social media all the time. It was definitely a struggle but the older I got I realized that social media was all an illusion. In the end, comparison is the thief of all joy. Whether you are comparing your relationship, house, finances, looks, clothes, toe nail lengths, etc.…just know comparison doesn’t add any value but disparities to your life.
Your time will soon come…be patient and give yourself a break!

The lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.– Philippians 4:4-7
