Happy New Year!! I decided to create this post because March 2017 marks my one year anniversary of giving up meat! Yay! Well not completely…BOO! I still consume seafood for extra nutrition and protein. Anyhow, I’ve been snooping and lurking through grocery store aisles for vegan/vegetarian brands I’ve never tried before. Some were a HIT! Others were definitely a miss and two steps away from being cancerous. Lastly, this post isn’t to ridicule meat-lovers, eaters, etc. I’m only sharing my views on the products I tried in the past months. I do encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new!
Now lets get started…
Boca Veggie Crumbles: Boca Veggie Crumbles were GREAT! I’ve tried them a couple of years ago and fell in love. Y’all, seriously you can’t tell the difference! I made vegan chili for my family using Boca Veggie Crumbles and they asked for a repeat the following week.
Now the actual “meat” has a distinct meat substitute taste that may be hard to denote if you don’t season it well. I sautéed mines as if I was cooking regular meat but added a few more pinches of seasoning to avoid that distinct taste. Would I purchase this again? Yes! But in the meantime, I’ll be testing out ways to duplicate a homemade version instead. If you wanna know how I made the vegan chili, click here!
Tofurky: I was walking through my favorite grocery store when I spotted a small vegan section at the produce department. I became curious at the array of interesting items like, “Tofurky’s Pepp’roni.” The price was not scary and the packaging sold me. So I went home and made Pizza Bagels! Y’all these “pepperonis” are so BOMB! They even have an extra kick to them too. I was taken aback by how much flavor and protein was packed into each one. Not only that but just how identical it tastes to the real thing. HOWEVER, the initial opening of the package was a different story. THE SMELL. THE SMELL, it was r-e-p-u-l-s-i-v-e. I’m totally sensitive to smell and taste so for you it may be a different experience. Despite the smell, would I purchase them again? Maybe..maybe not. I’m planning on making a homemade version using Minimalist Baker’s recipe.
MorningStar Farms ‘Sausage Patties’: These patties were another hit. I know, I know, you may be saying, “She thinks they’re ALL hits!” Well guess what, they really, really are. THEY ALL HAD POTENTIAL. I made English muffin sandwiches which were so amazing! I remember when I was younger, I used to love eating Mickey D’s breakfast sandwiches BUT to know that I can make a healthier version…meat-free is a win-win. The package comes with a reasonable amount of patties that you can make them each morning. Super convenient and affordable. I was inspired by I Love Vegan’s How to Make A Vegan Breakfast Sandwich For Less Than $3” and after reading her post I was hooked. The only downside (WHICH IS MAJOR) to this product is the ever-so long ingredient list! I’m weary of what I put into my body and I’ll be making homemade ‘Sausage Patties’ instead. Would I purchase this produce again? Maybe not, as mentioned above, the ingredient list is too much.

P.S- I tried Maple Brown Sugar tempeh, bad idea.
As always, thanks for reading and i’ll see you on my next post!
